Hill City Roasters was not created to only be a coffee roasting company. We formed this company with three main tenets in mind: Connect, Support and Educate.
Connect: Throughout history, coffee has symbolized fellowship and connection. Coffee houses in the Arabian Peninsula in the 15th and 16th centuries were so important to the exchange of information that they were often referred to as “Schools of the Wise”.
By the 17th century, coffee found its way to Europe and coffee houses were quickly becoming centers of social activity and communication in the major cities of England, Austria, France, Germany and Holland. In England “penny universities” sprang up, so called because for the price of a penny one could purchase a cup of coffee and engage in stimulating conversation.
Fast forward to WWII when American soldiers start getting Maxwell House coffee in their ration kits (a practice we are proud to continue with our support of the 49th EOD War Pigs serving overseas.
We feel strongly about continuing the association. It is our wish that our coffee in some way helps you to connect to a family member, a current friend or helps you make new friends. Coffee is a great way to connect!
Support: We are committed to making a difference on our community. We donate a portion of our profits to charities and other organizations in our local community. Please navigate to our Partners page to get an overview of the organizations we support. Although the sale of coffee allows us to give directly to our local communities, we feel it’s equally important to address areas of inequality throughout the whole coffee lifecycle. We source ethically grown coffee beans from farmers who are paid more than a fair wage and our suppliers share our vision of giving back to the their communities.
Educate: We may be biased but we think coffee is cool and are amazed at the equal amounts of science and art that goes into that bag of coffee that you purchase from us. Our blog posts are designed to provide you with (hopefully) interesting information on everything from green coffee processing to brewing methods to factors that affect coffee tasting profiles.
At Hill City Roasters, we have a unique opportunity to let some light into what seems to be an ever darkening world. We feel that we are called to make a difference and it is our duty to support our communities when possible.
We hope you enjoy our coffee as much as we enjoy roasting it for you!
